The fourth annual West End Music Festival, presented by the Adelaide West End Association,
was launched last night at The IVC Room. Preceding an acoustic performance by premier
artists The Huckleberry Swedes, Immediate Past President of the AWEA and candidate for
Adelaide City Council Arna Eyers-White spoke about the genesis of the event, and plans for its
“The event was designed to showcase the venues within the West End Precinct, featuring small
venues like Grace Emily, Union and World’s End Hotels, the large music venues such as Jive
and HQ and interesting nightspots such as Casablabla and Higher Ground. Many people have
not been to these places, and are unaware that they offer music all year round.”
The artists are also integral to the success of the event. The West End is home to the most live
music venues in Adelaide, and artists of the calibre of The Audrey’s and Hilltop Hoods got
their start here.
This year, the West End Music Festival features the acoustic folk pop of Esther Lamb, the jazz
funk of Mr Goodnight, metal with Stolen Youth and Se Bon Ki Ra, hardcore punk with UK’s
GBH and the rock of Thirsty Merc as well as 40 more artists who will perform over three days
from Friday Oct 15 to Sunday Oct 17.
Many events are free, and the full program is available from various west end venues and
businesses, or via the AWEA website.
Ms Eyers-White noted that the event had been organised with very little funding, and thanked
the Adelaide City Council, McDonalds Hindley Street and dB Magazine for their valuable
sponsorship for the event.
“We’d like to grow this event to become one of the flagship community festivals,” said Ms
Eyers-White. “Contemporary music is a vital part of this city, and nowhere more so than in the
West End. The music industry is very proud of their contribution to South Australia, and we’d
like everyone to see the great venues we have on offer and the fantastic musicians that play in
